Our next session of classes starts tomorrow, come join us for some Brazilian dance and percussion and warm up this winter!

Percussion Classes

ADVANCED BATERIA (10 weeks) – Register here!
Dates: Wednesdays, January 8th to March 12th
Time: 7 – 8:20 pm
Location: McGaw YMCA, 1000 Grove Street, Skydeck South Room, 2nd Floor, Evanston

Cost: $140 per person; $85 for students with ID; $75 per additional family member

SAMBA DANCE WORKSHOP WITH DILL COSTA (3 weeks) – Register here!

The EEDS Bateria at our 2013 4th of July Parade Spectacular

2014 promises to be EEDS’ biggest year ever. Join the party before it’s too late! By joining our classes, you can be part of our first ever 2014 Carnaval and 4th of July Parade.

Previous bateria members and those with previous percussion experience can register for Advanced Bateria (10 weeks), while kids and parents can make samba a family affair with our special Children’s Bateria (8 weeks). All classes will be taught by our mestre da bateria, Reed Flygt. See below for class and registration information!

ADVANCED BATERIA (10 weeks)
Dates: Wednesdays, January 8th to March 12th
Time: 7 – 8:20 pm
Location: McGaw YMCA, 1000 Grove Street, Skydeck South Room, 2nd Floor, Evanston
Cost: $140 per person; $85 for students with ID; $75 per additional family member

Class Description:
Join Evanston Escola de Samba as we prepare for our Carnaval Performance in March. You will learn the fundamentals of Rio Style Batucada, 2 samba de enredos, and a unique samba reggae arrangement that will culminate with two mandatory performance opportunities. All levels of enthusiasts are encouraged to attend. If you have not previously participated in an EEDS advanced bateria class, simply contact Reed Flygt (reedflygt@gmail.com) to discuss your level of experience. The final decision is up to the bateria director.

CHILDREN’S BATERIA (7 weeks)
Dates: Wednesdays, January 29th to March 12th
Time: 6- 6:50 pm
Location: McGaw YMCA, 1000 Grove Street, Skydeck South Room, 2nd Floor, Evanston
Cost: $75 per person

Class Description:
Join Evanston Escola de Samba in a fun and enriching children’s class where we make music and learn about the different instruments of the bateria. The children’s group is open to all children 6 years and up, simply contact Reed Flygt (reedflygt@gmail.com). Parents are encouraged to register as well. The children’s bateria is also composed of current EEDS members.

Want to escape the cold weather and heat up 2014? Then join EEDS Head of Dance, the legendary Dill Costa, for an intensive three-class samba dance workshop on January 8, 15, and 22, from 6-7pm. You can attend all three classes for just $40 total.

This class is expected to sell out, so act quickly! 

Dill will be holding this workshop at EEDS’ home studio, McGaw YMCA 1000 Grove Street, kydeck South Room, 2nd floor, in Evanston. Register here before time runs out, and see all you sambistas on January 8!

2014 is almost here – and it’s time to gear up for a new session of Evanston Escola de Samba percussion and dance classes! Information about cost and registration policies will be up shortly – but for now – be sure to keep these dates in mind.

Introduction to Brazilian Dance
Instructor: Ariel Barbick
Learn how to move and groove your body along with the fun fast-paced rhythms of Brazilian music. In this class you will explore many different styles of Brazilian dance as you learn how to move your body along with a variety of Brazilian rhythms such as samba, batucada, samba-reggae, axé and forró.
*Wear comfortable workout clothing, non-grip shoes (heels not recommended), and bring a water bottle.

Wednesdays, October 16th to November 13th (5 Classes)
Time: 6 – 6:55 PM
Class is for ages 16+, Limit of 20 students
Fee: $75 for five classes, $45 for students with ID, and $60 for non-students who bring a friend. So, any friend you bring gets to pay 60, and if they bring friends, the friends pay 60 as well! The more the merrier.

EEDS Fall Percussion classes start this week!

Hi EEDS bateria, friends and family – hope you enjoyed a nice long weekend! The unofficial arrival of fall means that start of the EEDS fall percussion class sessions. All percussion classes begin on Wednesday, September 4th, for both beginners and more advanced bateria members (there was a typo previously, sorry!). Classes this session will be held in a new location, the McGaw YMCA in Evanston (1000 Grove St.), close to the Davis Purple line CTA stop. Sign up for classes now! You can either pay in advance or on the first day of class. We can’t wait to see you there!

EEDS Fall Percussion Class Schedule is Up!

Alô bateria! Hey there sambistas, the Evanston Escola de Samba fall percussion class schedule is up! Classes start Wednesday, September 4th, which is right around the corner. We have two sessions: one for beginning percussionists and one for intermediate and experienced percussionists. You can register for the class here, payments can be made in advance on PayPal; or by check, cash, or credit card on the first day of class.Image

Percussion Class Wednesday (June 19th) and Performance Friday (June 21st)

Hello Sambistas! We trust this message finds you all well. Sorry about missing class last week, but we felt it was in our best interests to play it safe and not venture out. But on the plus side:

Class resumes this Wednesday! (June 19th)
  • 2008 W. Dempster Street
  • $50 for the session ($25 with student ID). Day of class: CASH ONLY
  • If you would like to register in advance, online via PayPal, click here.
  • 6:00 pm Beginners , 7:00 pm Advanced
  • We will have shirts and merchandise for sale. Day of class: CASH ONLY.

 We have our first performance this Friday! (June 21st)
  • ALL ARE WELCOME. We are participating in Make Music Chicago in Evanston!
  • 6:00 pm call time at Fountain Square (corner of Church & Sherman, Evanston)
  • 6:30 pm performance, outdoors. We will walk around the fountain and have fun making music. Then we will walk to Nichols Hall (1490 W Chicago Ave, Evanston).
  • There will be a brief performance at Nichols Hall at 7 pm. It will be less than 10 minutes outside on the steps, and we will be done around 7:15 pm.
MANDATORY DRESS for Performance: white bottom pants, capris, or dress; an official Evanston Escola de Samba shirt (available Wednesday evening); and big smile.
Other News:
We are still finding the best time to reschedule class: most likely it will be Sunday June 23rd or 30th in the evening (as soon as we know we will let you know).
